How to straighten hair with the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener
Straightening your hair can be wrought with issues, from heat damage, to frizz, to getting tangled in cords. The cordless Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener has been designed to tackle the grievances of hair straightening and provide a beautiful, shiny finish with less risk of heat damage and hair snagging.
The Dyson Corrale™ is a hair straightener with flexible manganese-copper alloy plates that change shape to gather your hair and reduce the amount of pressure you need to apply.
The plates can flex because they’re made from fifteen individual facets of the alloy, compared to typical straighteners that use flat plates made of one solid, inflexible piece.
The Dyson Corrale™ gives you more control than average straighteners because the plates are machined to 65 microns, the width of a human hair. This means the flexible plates accurately shape around and gather the lock of hair or tress, controlling it. This stops it splaying, so the tension is applied evenly, and no hairs can escape.
Because the tension is even and the control is high, the Dyson Corrale™ needs fewer passes to achieve straight hair than traditional hair straighteners, meaning you expose your hair to less heat and reduce the likelihood of damage.
And because our flexible plates are flex-tested over 422,000 times to ensure their quality, they’ll last and last and last.
This machine can be used to achieve any number of hairstyles. In this article, we’ll look at how to straighten hair without heat damage.
Preparation
First, start with freshly washed and dried hair. Wet hair is much more susceptible to damage, especially from heat, because being wet causes the hair cortex to swell, breaking some of the hydrogen bonds and weakening the hair.¹ Plus, because water has a boiling point lower than the average heat of hair straighteners, you’re more likely to encounter heat damage while styling with wet hair.
Once dry, apply your favorite styling product and detangle your hair. Start combing at your tips and progress upwards to your roots with a detangling brush.
If you have Type 4 hair, stretch your coils out with the Wide tooth comb attachment. This will make straightening easier and safer for your hair, as it’ll be at its maximum length and therefore less likely to tangle.²
Finally, section your hair so that you can work through it methodically. The number of sections you’ll require, as well as their size, will depend on the thickness of your hair. People with thick, coarse, or curly hair may need more sections of a smaller size, whereas those with finer hair may need larger sections, but fewer of them.
Using the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener
Before you use the Dyson Corrale™, you need to check it’s fully charged. To charge it, ensure the flight ready tag is inserted, so that the battery is connected. Then simply dock it in the charging station or attach the charging cord.
The Dyson Corrale™ features universal voltage, meaning it can be charged in any country which, coupled with the flight mode, makes it a convenient travel styler. For more information, read our article, How to travel with the Dyson Corrale™.
When your device is fully charged, which will only take 70 minutes, disconnect it from its charger and unlock it by sliding up the lock button. This puts the Dyson Corrale™ into cordless mode, meaning you don’t have a pesky wire attached to the machine which could complicate the straightening process.
The Dyson Corrale™ can achieve the thermal performance of a corded straightener thanks to its 4-cell lithium-ion battery that gives it 30 minutes of powerful, uninterrupted battery life.
And if you need longer, you can always attach the magnetic 360˚rotating charging cable to activate hybrid charge mode, so you can style as you charge. Because it has a full 360˚ of rotation, it prevents tangling or snagging as you manoeuvre your machine.
Which temperature should I use?
Next, you need to select your temperature. This will change depending on your hair type and needs. There are three temperatures, 329°F (165°C), 365°F (185°C) and 410°F (210°C). As a rule of thumb, if you have type 4 hair, then you should use 410°F (210°C), if you have thin or fine hair, then select 329°F (165°C) to prevent damage, and for other hair types, select 365°F (185°C).
The machine will chime to let you know when the desired temperature has been reached and it’s ready to use.
It checks the temperature of its plates 100 times per second to ensure it doesn’t exceed your chosen temperature and shows the current temperature on its OLED screen so you can personally track temperature in real time.
Temperature can be displayed in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. To swap between these two units, hold down the plus and power button when on the temperature select screen.
How to straighten hair without heat damage
Make sure to reduce the temperature when handling hairline sections to ensure you don’t damage your hair.
Place your hair, a section at a time, within the center of the Dyson Corrale™ so the flexible plates can gather your hair. Make sure you’re holding your hair taut, as the tension will help straighten your hair quickly and more effectively.
Glide the machine to the ends of your hair slowly and evenly. Because the plates flex as you move, you don’t need to apply excess pressure or heat and can simply rely on the machine to gather your hair. To align your shorter hairs, tilt the machine slightly inwards as you straighten.
If your tips are thinner than your roots, style your roots and mid-lengths before styling your tips separately. This is important because thin hair is more susceptible to damage and the more passes you do, the greater the likelihood of heat damage. By styling your thicker hair and thinner hair separately, you avoid doing too many passes on your thin hair while trying to straighten your thick hair.
Once you get to the end of a section, simply repeat the process with each section of hair. Remember, if you’re using the Dyson Corrale™ in cordless mode, place the machine on the charging dock while you prepare hair sections to extend the runtime.
After you’ve finished every section, turn your machine off. The power button will flash with a blinking light as the plates cool down. Once the light has stopped, close and lock your machine and place it back in the charging dock.
If you forget to turn your machine off, it’ll turn itself off after 10 minutes of no use. This is thanks to its automatic safety shut off feature, which is in place to help keep you safe.
Now apply your favorite styling product. With typical straighteners, you may notice a build-up of static in your hair due to a lack of moisture and an increase in friction, which can cause your hair to look frizzy. However, the Dyson Corrale™ features Tourmaline edges that have ionizing properties which help reduce static and frizz.
Extra styling tips
If you want extra style, you can make your hair frame your face. To do so, rotate your machine 45° on some sections as you straighten them.
You can also shape the ends of your hair by rotating by 45° at the very end of sections. This will give your hair a sleek, sophisticated look. This is especially easy to do in cordless mode as you don’t have to worry about your machine getting tangled.
Additionally, you can add a bouncy fringe by lifting your front hair section and then pulling down and under with the Dyson Corrale™. This will create a slightly curved, elastic fringe to compliment your sleek style. Remember not to apply excess force, instead let the machine do the work.
