How to use the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler for perfect curls and waves
Your Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler can create many styles, from beach waves to volumized curls. Our Dyson Experts take you through how to get the most from your machine, so you can style your hair your way.
How to use the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler to curl
Thanks to the Coanda effect, it’s very simple to curl hair with the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler.
Start with sectioned, damp hair. First, select your preferred heat and air flow settings. Take the first section of your hair and hold it around 10cm from the end. Slowly bring your hair towards the barrel until your hair attaches and then move the machine towards your head. You don’t need to twist the machine, as the Coanda effect will attract and wrap your hair around the barrel.
Hold for 15 seconds or until dry. Set your look with a cold shot for 5-10 seconds then switch it off to release your hair. This will give each section of hair either voluminous curls or tight ringlets, depending on which barrel you use. Repeat this process until all you have curled all your sections. To change curl direction between sections, rotate the cool tip.
How to use the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler for waves
The Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler can also be used to create soft, unstructured waves.
First, brush your wet hair until it becomes damp, using a high power, high heat, Firm smoothing brush for thick hair or Soft smoothing brush for fine hair.
Then section your hair and choose the correct barrel for your hair type. Use the barrel’s arrows as a guide and manually wrap your sectioned hair around it. Hold your ends away from the barrel and wait for your hair to dry.
Use the cold shot to set the waves then turn the machine off and release your hair. Repeat this process for all your hair sections, alternating the direction of the barrel as you do so. You’ll quickly and easily find yourself with beautiful, beach-worthy waves.
How to add volume to your hair with the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler
To create volume, first wet and section your hair, brush the bottom sections from underneath using the Round volumizing brush, then brush upwards to the tips of your hair. When the hair is almost dry, roll it around the volumizing brush and use a 5-10 second cold shot to finish it. Release your hair from the brush and repeat this process with each section of your hair.
Use your brush to lift your side hair sections up from underneath and outwards to shape them. You can then shape the tips of your hair by wrapping them around your volumizing brush and setting with a 5-10 second cold shot. Repeat this process with your front hair section to shape the front.
Now you can turn your Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler off and run your fingers through your hair to loosen and texturize it. This should leave your hair looking much more voluminous.
Hairstyling tips
Now you know how to style your hair, you’re ready for some more advanced tips and tricks to take your style to the next level.
Increase style retention
The Dyson Airwrap™ uses hot air to break down your hair’s hydrogen bonds so you can style your hair, and cold air in the form of the cold shot to prevent bonds breaking further to increase style retention.
To activate the cold shot, slide the power button into the top position and hold it there for 10-15 seconds, depending on the style you’re creating and your hair type.
Once the time is up, simply turn the cold shot off and gently take the Dyson Airwrap™ out of your hair.
Natural looking style
Curls naturally form going in different directions, so if you want to style more naturalistic curls, you should make yours do the same. The new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler barrels use Enhanced Coanda airflow for increased control. They now allow you to easily switch curl direction as you style, creating both clockwise and anti-clockwise curls by twisting the cool tip. If you change direction for each section you curl, you will make a more natural-looking curly hairstyle.
The re-engineered barrels are compatible with all generations of the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler, including older models, and can be bought separately.
Rough dry
When styling with the Dyson Airwrap™, start with wet hair, rough dry your hair using the Pre-styling dryer attachment that comes with your machine. If you rough dry to around 85% dryness, so that your hair is damp, you will be able to style and dry your hair simultaneously. Also, when using the pre-styling dryer, lift your hair at the root to dry your roots properly and create a bit of volume.
Relaxed styling
To give your hair a more relaxed look, start your styling around two inches from the root. This gives a less all-encompassing look that makes for a more casual hairstyle. To get an even more relaxed style, gently pull down on your hair while it’s still hot to loosen your curls or waves
Adding body to waves
The premier feature of the Dyson Airwrap™ is its automated curling. However, you can also manually wrap your hair around your machine to achieve slightly different effects. Using the automated curling is a great way to attain classic curls that bend all the way down your hair. Manually wrapping adds more body to the center of your hair but doesn’t provide the full hair curl. Plus, because manual wrapping is not as tight as automated wrapping, your hair looks looser and wavier.
